How do I resize an image to 1920x1080?
What asks for 1920 × 1080
Desktop wallpapers, presentation slides, video backgrounds, YouTube thumbnails and channel art, digital signage, streaming overlays, and the great majority of screens people are looking at. It is the default resolution of the modern display, which is why so many things are specified in terms of it.
It is also the standard video frame, so an image destined to appear in a video — a title card, a still, a background plate — needs to be exactly this or it will be scaled by the editor, usually less carefully.
Crop or letterbox: the actual decision
Almost nothing you own is 16:9 already. A 4:3 phone photo made 16:9 loses a quarter of its height. That is a lot of picture, and where it comes from matters — a landscape usually survives it, since sky and foreground are the least interesting parts. A portrait photograph usually does not.
When the crop would remove something you need, do the opposite: keep the image whole and put it on a 1920×1080 canvas with bars at the sides. The border tool’s exact-canvas mode does that, in any colour, and black bars on a video frame read as intentional rather than as a mistake.
Thumbnails have a second requirement
If this is for a video thumbnail, dimensions are only half the specification — there is almost always a file size ceiling as well, and it is usually the one that catches people out. YouTube’s published limit and the rest of its requirements are on the thumbnail page, sourced and dated, with the tool preloaded to meet all of them at once.
Doing both in one pass matters. Resizing to 1920×1080 and then compressing the result is two lossy saves where one would do, and the second one is working on an image that has already lost detail.
Downscaling large photographs
Going from a 6000-pixel camera file to 1920 is a large reduction, and doing it in one jump is where images pick up a hard, aliased look — fine texture turns into noise. Common questions
- Why does my photo lose the top and bottom?
- Because 16:9 is much wider, relative to its height, than any camera produces. A phone photo is 4:3 and a camera photo is usually 3:2; making either of them 16:9 means removing a horizontal band. The alternative is adding black bars at the sides, which keeps the whole picture and leaves a smaller image in the middle of the frame.
- Is 1920 × 1080 the same as 1080p?
- Yes. 1080p refers to 1080 rows of pixels scanned progressively, which at 16:9 makes the width 1920. Full HD is the same thing again. It is the most common screen resolution in use and the default frame size for most video.
- My image is only 1200 pixels wide. Should I still do this?
- It will work, and the result will be softer than a genuine 1920-pixel image, because the missing pixels are calculated from the ones you have rather than recovered. For a background or a slide that is usually acceptable. For anything with text in it, find a larger original — enlarged text is where upscaling looks worst.
- Can I hit a file size limit at the same time?
- Yes. Set the maximum under Advanced options. The 1920×1080 dimensions become a floor the compression cannot go below, so you get exactly that size at the best quality your limit allows rather than a smaller image that fits more easily.
