How do I resize an image to 1080x1080?
The square problem
Cameras do not take square photographs. Phones shoot 4:3, most cameras shoot 3:2, and screenshots are whatever shape your screen is. So every square image starts as a rectangle with something removed, and the only real question is what.
Upload a rectangle to a square slot and the platform decides for you, almost always by taking the middle. That is fine for a landscape with the subject dead centre and bad for almost everything else — group photos lose the people at the ends, portraits lose the top of a head, product shots lose the part of the product that was not centred.
Doing it here means you choose. The crop frame starts centred and square, and you drag it to the part that matters before anything is resized.
Where 1080 × 1080 is asked for
Square feed posts, profile pictures, album artwork, marketplace thumbnails, and a large number of website avatar slots. The number itself is a display convention rather than a hard rule in most of those places — what is a hard rule is the 1:1 shape, and 1080 is the resolution that looks right on a phone without being so large that the platform re-compresses it with settings you cannot see.
Where a specific platform has published exact requirements, they are on sizes by platform with a link to the documentation and the date it was read. Where it has not, 1080 square is the safe default.
Consider not cropping at all
If the picture genuinely does not survive a square crop — a tall portrait, a wide group shot, a whole document — the alternative is to keep it intact and add bars. The border tool pads any image out to 1:1 without removing a single pixel, which costs you some frame area but keeps the photograph.
That trade is worth thinking about before you crop, because cropping is the one operation here you cannot undo from the output file. Your original is untouched either way — nothing on this site modifies the file you already have — but the downloaded square only contains what you kept.
Getting it sharp
Start from the largest version of the photo you have. A picture that has been through a messaging app has usually already been reduced and compressed once, and resizing that to 1080 square gives you a soft square. The file straight off the camera or out of the photo library will always look better, even though it is slower to open.

Common questions
- Why 1080 × 1080 specifically?
- It is the largest square most social feeds will store and display without resampling it themselves, and it is comfortably sharp on a high-density phone screen. Uploading something much larger just means the platform reduces it with its own settings rather than yours; uploading something much smaller means it gets stretched on a modern display.
- Will my photo be squashed to fit?
- No. Squashing a rectangular photo into a square is what makes faces look wrong, and FileBelow will not do it. A square region is taken from the picture instead — by default the centre, and you can drag it anywhere before pressing the button.
- What if my photo is smaller than 1080 pixels?
- It will be enlarged to reach 1080, and the page will say so. Enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured, so the result is softer than a genuine 1080-pixel photo. If you have a larger original anywhere — the file straight off the camera rather than one already sent through a messaging app — use that instead.
- Can I set a file size limit as well?
- Yes. Open Advanced options and enter the maximum. Dimensions become a floor the compression is not allowed to go below, so you get exactly 1080×1080 at the best quality that fits your limit, rather than a smaller image that happens to be under it.
