Where the 2 MB limit comes from

Two megabytes is the most common ceiling on the web, and it is not a coincidence. It is the default maximum upload size in a lot of the software that sits behind forms: content management systems, applicant tracking systems used for job applications, university and council portals, and the mobile upload path for a YouTube thumbnail. Nobody chose 2 MB because it suits photographs. It was a sensible default a decade ago and it has been inherited ever since.

Meanwhile the photos have grown. A picture taken on a recent phone is routinely between 3 MB and 8 MB, and a 48-megapixel setting can push a single image past 15 MB. So the gap between what your camera produces and what the form accepts is now wider than it has ever been, which is why this particular rejection is so common.

What usually goes wrong

The instinct is to open the photo in whatever editor is nearest and drag a quality slider down until the file is small enough. That works, in the narrow sense that you end up under 2 MB, but it is the worst of the available trade-offs. Holding the image at full resolution and compressing harder is what produces the blocky squares around edges and the smeared, watercolour look in areas of fine detail — hair, foliage, fabric, text.

The alternative is to give up some pixels instead. A 12-megapixel photo reduced to six megapixels and encoded at high quality will usually look considerably better at 2 MB than the same photo kept at twelve megapixels and crushed. Nobody looking at the result on a screen can tell it was resized; everybody can tell it was crushed.

FileBelow does not make you guess which is better. It encodes candidates at several resolutions, compares each one against your original, and returns whichever scored highest while staying under 2 MB. For most photos at this particular limit the answer is that no resizing is needed at all — 2 MB is generous enough that quality alone gets there.

If it still will not fit

Very few photographs cannot reach 2 MB, so if you see a failure it usually means something specific is in the way. The most common cause is a minimum-dimension requirement pulling in the opposite direction: a form that wants an image at least 3000 pixels wide and under 2 MB is asking for something that a detailed photograph may not be able to deliver. When that happens FileBelow tells you the dimensions that would work rather than failing silently, and offers them as a button.

The other cause is format. A PNG has no quality setting, so the only way to make one smaller is to remove pixels. If your source is a PNG photograph, converting it to JPEG or WebP will reach 2 MB at far larger dimensions. FileBelow will suggest this, and it verifies the suggestion by actually encoding it first.

A note on what 2 MB means

Upload forms disagree about this. Some check your file against 2,097,152 bytes (two binary megabytes) and some against 2,000,000 bytes. FileBelow aims at 2,000,000, because that is the smaller of the two — a file that meets it will be accepted under either interpretation. If a form has rejected a file you were certain was under the limit, this discrepancy is a likely explanation.
