How do I resize an image to 1280x720?
The minimum that platforms accept
1280 × 720 is the smallest image most video platforms will take as a thumbnail, and it is a floor rather than a target. It exists because anything smaller looks visibly soft the moment it is shown at full width on a large screen, and platforms would rather refuse it than display it.
It is a genuinely useful size when a file size limit is doing the work. At 720p you have roughly a third of the pixels of Full HD, which means roughly a third of the byte budget problem — an image that cannot reach a 2 MB ceiling at 1920 wide will usually reach it comfortably at 1280 while still looking clean.
Same shape, different resolution
1280×720 and 1920×1080 are both exactly 16:9, which has a practical consequence: a crop chosen for one works unchanged for the other. If you are producing both — a thumbnail and a title card, say — crop once and resize twice rather than framing the shot separately each time.

Where the picture goes
Reaching 16:9 from a 4:3 phone photo means losing a quarter of the height, and it is worth deciding which quarter. The crop frame starts centred; drag it up to keep a sky, down to keep a foreground, or to whichever part actually carries the subject.
If nothing can be spared, put the whole image on a 1280×720 canvas with bars instead — the border tool does this, and on a video frame black bars read as a deliberate choice rather than as a mistake.
Do the size limit at the same time
Thumbnails almost always come with a byte ceiling as well as a pixel size, and the ceiling is what catches people out. Set both together under Advanced options rather than resizing first and compressing afterwards — two lossy saves cost more quality than one, and the second is working on an image that has already lost some.

Common questions
- Is 1280 × 720 big enough for a video thumbnail?
- It is the published minimum for YouTube and it is accepted, but it is a minimum rather than a recommendation. A thumbnail is displayed at anything from 120 pixels wide in a sidebar to full width on a television, and the larger source holds up better at the top of that range. Use 1280×720 when file size is the binding constraint and 1920×1080 when it is not.
- Why does this size still exist if screens are bigger?
- Because it is small. 720p is a quarter of the data of 1080p at the same quality setting, which matters where bandwidth, storage or an upload limit is the constraint — and it is still the same 16:9 shape, so nothing has to be re-cropped if you move up later.
- Will resizing down from 4K make it blurry?
