Where this image actually appears
The wide banner at the top of a Play Store listing, and the artwork used if the app is featured in a promotional collection. It is also the frame a promo video plays over, so anything important sitting dead centre can end up behind a play button.
Preparing one properly
Keep the focal content away from the middle and away from the edges. The centre may be covered by a play button, and the graphic is cropped differently across the surfaces it appears on, so anything near a border is liable to be trimmed. A clear background with the subject slightly off-centre survives all of it.
The mistake people make
Treating it as a screenshot. It is a poster, not a demonstration — a shrunken picture of the interface reads as noise at the size this is displayed, while a single clear image and a very short line of text reads instantly.
