What Google Business Profile business photo means in practice

Between 10 KB and 5 MB, at least 250 by 250 pixels, with 720 by 720 recommended. JPG or PNG.

Photos are one of the few things a business controls in local search results; a rejected upload simply leaves the listing bare.

Where this image actually appears

Photos on a Business Profile appear in Google Search and Maps beside the listing, and they are frequently the only thing a person looks at before deciding whether to visit. They sit alongside photos customers have uploaded themselves, which are usually less flattering and often more numerous.

Preparing one properly

Shoot in daylight, level, and show the thing a customer needs to recognise — the frontage, the interior, the actual product. Avoid stock imagery entirely: a generic photograph of somebody else's premises is worse than no photograph, because it fails the one job the picture has, which is helping somebody know they are in the right place.

The mistake people make

Uploading only a logo. A logo is already displayed as the profile image, and a gallery consisting of a logo tells a person nothing about what they will find when they arrive.

Meeting the requirements

Choosing Google Business Profile above sets every rule in the table at once, and the result panel reports each one with a pass or a fail rather than leaving you to check. Note the lower bound: Google Business Profile rejects a file for being too small as well as too large, so the search aims just under the ceiling rather than as low as it can go.

To see what is wrong before changing anything, the Google Business Profile requirement check reports every rule against your file without processing it.

Common questions

What size should a Google Business Profile business photo be?
at least 250px wide · under 5 MB · JPEG or PNG. Those are the values published by Google Business Profile itself, read from its documentation on 2026-08-21 — the source link is on this page so you can check it. Platforms change requirements without announcing it, so verify before anything important.
What photos should a Google Business Profile have?
At minimum the exterior as it looks from the street, the interior, and whatever the business actually sells. Exterior shots matter most, because somebody standing outside is trying to confirm they have found the right door. Photos in daylight from the direction a customer approaches from are the most useful.
Can I remove customer photos from my profile?
Not directly — they can only be reported if they breach the content policies, and an unflattering photo is not a breach. The practical answer is to add enough good photos of your own that they are what people see first.
Is my image uploaded when I use this page?
No. The image is opened, measured and processed by your own browser. This site is entirely static and has no server that could receive a file, which you can confirm in your browser’s network tab or by going offline after the page has loaded.
